Writer’s Choice Intro

The paper that I am most proud of during the quarter, “Kicking up Dust”, was our second “Movie Talk” assignment (Intermission #2) that helped us explore what it means to “cross boundaries” that our societies have put in place. In the movie Lone Star, Sam Deeds plays a sheriff in a small boarder town in Texas who ironically breaks local traditions by upholding the law. The regulations and established “rules” in this small town are threatened as Sam prudently uncovers a forty-five year old murder mystery kept secret by the local authorities, “A whodunit murder mystery with a clash of cultures and times.”. Again, I feel really proud of my analysis of this film because of the fact that I established very clearly how Sam Deeds fit’s the role of an “outsider” by executing his duty in this clannish town.

Understanding my Audience

Unit #2 continued with “our exploration into challenging our assumptions” for what it means to be a community. This second writing assignment, “What is a community” was meant to show how a community shares different experiences, while enjoying all of the familiarities that connect us together. Due to my interview, own experiences and observations, and my evaluation of my findings, I felt like I did a good job in proving how Myspace is truly a very tight community in the modern world in which we live, “My Space is a social networking website held together by the thousands of members who communicate with each other to stay connected with people you might not see everyday.”.

Critical Thinking Intro

Intermission #1 gave us a break from our reading activities and allowed us to explore what it means to be an “outcast or outsider”. After watching the movie, Akeelah and the Bee, I displayed my analytical skills by providing specific examples from the film to show how Akeelah truly felt like an outsider, “From the opening scene, Akeelah describes how she feels different from everything and everyone around her.” I feel like I captured the scenes from many angles which produced a clearer picture for the reader to understand.
